Ever since i heard that this movie won 5 oscars and swiped the 1999 oscars, i was pretty eager to watch it ! I finally got my chance to watch it only last month !! And i was glad that i finally watched it !! It truly deserves the recognition and the Oscars !! Although there are really funny moments through out the movie - i wont call this a comedy - maybe a "Black comedy" with umpteen lessons for life !! Well , there are very few movies that make you laugh and think simultaneously ! American Beauty is one of those few gem of a movies ! After watching this movie, viewers will think long and hard about their own lives as well as the lives of people around them. Because each and every character in the movie - not only that of Kevin Spacey - provides us something thing to ponder over - that happens in our everyday life - but we are hesitant to take notice of !

Like for example , the character "Carolyn Burnham" shields herself from sadness by adopting a positive-thinking philosophy, a philosophy of self-affirming mantras and harsh self-discipline. Positive thinking may help you attain your goals, but that also blinds you from reality. Is it wise or moral to change the channel when you hear about mass starvation in Africa so you can enjoy moments of fleeting happiness from some romantic movie? Self-help is just a euphemism for self-deception. All humans need some complex kinda fraudulent way to distract them from the harsh realities of life, whether it's religion, money, or even love :)

So this flick , is not only is it entertaining but it is also filled with interesting ideas. It's an important film for society because there's so much society needs to learn.
